ABOUT US
OUR STORY
Livingstone Kaweesi
Livingstone Kaweesi lived and worked in Rakai District, in a school called Holy Family Nazareth Secondary School. During this period, he observed and witnessed different scenarios related to orphaned children, in an area which was first hit by HIV/AIDs in Uganda. These scenarios included; inability to access education, medical care, good nutrition, good accommodation, parental care and guidance.
The drop-out rate from school was high. There was little regard to Christian values and principles, as some people attributed the HIV/AIDS scourge to witchcraft. The local leaders could not do much to curb the situation as they lacked leadership skills.
Livingstone Kaweesi was transferred to King’s College Budo in Wakiso District but had taken a decision to found an organisation that would curb the abnormally miserable situation. In 2016,
Livingstone Kaweesi started Focus on Orphans Foundation with its Education wing, Focus Junior School, located in Nsangi Sub-county, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District, Uganda, East Africa. Their efforts were mainly aiming at alleviating orphans’ disadvantage and ensuring that each orphan achieves her/his highest potential in life.
This education arm of the foundation currently manages all instruction, learning and early childhood development activities including the development of Christian values and child protection. Currently, the enrolment in Focus Junior School is 220 learners, of which 67 learners are orphans. The fees paid by 153 learners is what the organization uses to support the orphans and also meet the operating costs of the school such as salaries, utilities, rent, food, stationery and medical care. However, the foundation gets constrained as the funds are inadequate to run all those essential activities.
We are looking forward to expanding the school to accommodate more learners that are paying fees to increase the revenue for the organization. This will lead to increased numbers of orphans being supported by the school. In that way, the project will be self-sustaining. However, this expansion needs funds to be implemented. If the foundation is well funded, this strategy will lead to a gradual building up of the financial capacity to support the education of these orphans to post primary levels of education.
